Subject: [Bug-tar] problem observed in GNU tar in Linux 8.2

Hi,

My name is Joby Joseph and I reside in Bangalore,
India. I am using Linux 8.2 (with kernel revision
2.4.18-14). I observed one problem with tar utility
available in this release of Linux.

tar package - tar-1.13.25-8
tar version - tar (GNU tar) 1.13.25

When I use this tar utility to tar up some directory
tree, it trims off the file names which has more than
78 characters in the name (including the directory
path). Because of this, the tar file is corrupted and
cannot restore some files from the tar.

I would like to know whether this is an actual bug or
I am missing some options with tar. If it is is bug,
can you please tell me if there is any fixes released
for it ?

Thanks and regards,
- Joby
