[Bug-tar] FW: GNU tar --append is too slow

Thanks for the pointer. I hadn't come across star before. Unfortunately I
see the same problems with that (both the stable and development version, on
both Solaris and Linux) and couldn't find any options that helped. GNU tar
does seem a little faster though :-)
