this seems to only be happening on x86 systems ... i'm unable to reproduce it
on amd64/arm/hppa/ia64/s390 architectures using varing combinations of
gcc-3.3 and gcc-3.4 ...
i guess i'll just have to bite the bullet and track it myself since it looks
like a possible Gentoo/glibc issue
