Thanks for the details.

One observation: even with the long filenames it still only seemed to
occur some of the time - or I only got the error message some of the
time. I guess it could depend on how it chose to split the path, which
could give more or less than 138 characters (my paths tended to have
plenty of components, so it would have lots of choice).

Or is there any danger of a corrupted file without an error message from
