Thanks for reporting it, but I'm afraid that I can't figure out what
happened from this brief description.

Can you please try it again with GNU tar 1.16.1?  Something like this:

wget ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/tar/tar-1.16.1.tar.gz
gunzip <tar-1.16.1.tar.gz | tar xf -
cd tar-1.16.1
make check

If this doesn't work for you, please send us the output of the
above commands.  Thanks.
