No.  There is no compress on my system (current CentOS -- I assume it is
absent from lots of others too, due to the old patent stuff).

    Yes, tar tzf invokes gzip which is able to read old compress' input.

That's what I assumed.  So, how about making tar tf also invoke gzip?
In other words, why should tf fail when tzf works?
