OK, it looks like my guess was right. I updated the tarball to try to fix this. Can you please try it now? http://cs.ucla.edu/~eggert/tar-1.26-experimental.tar.gz Please m sure you get the current tarball (dated 2011-09-03 22:13:09 UTC) rather than an older, cached copy.
