When I try to decompress a tar.gz file using tar with the -z option i get:
tar: Child died with signal 11
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
I am using tar (GNU tar) 1.26, which is the version installed on mac OS X Yosemite. While for many files I can get around this by decompressing using gzip, for some files that are installed automatically via install and update commands for various software this is not an option.
What does this error mean and how do I fix it?
