Hello,
I use Debian Jessie x64 in french uft8-fr for my system.
If I copy a folder with filename like this "hébàtça.txt" or "mémoires.txt" on an usb stick I can read that files with original names without any problem on windows or osX.
If I make a tar archive with the same filename, copy the archive.tar to an usb stick and unarchive the archive.tar with Winrar or 7z for example on Windows, I can't obtain the original names : all the "é à ç ê è ù" are replaced by other ascii characters. It's unreadable.
Off course, if a make an archive.tar and extract it later inside my Debian, I didn't have any problem.
But the purpose of this, is to archive sensitive files on multiplatform.
For me the perfect way, is using a tar archive and encrypt it in a safe place. Like this I can restore my files on Win or osX. But this works only with english characters and I will need to rename thousands of files.
Best regards.
Marc
