To fix that particular problem I updated to the current Gnulib version, as 
follows:

git submodule foreach git pull origin master
git commit -m 'build: update gnulib submodule to latest' gnulib

You'll need to bootstrap, most likely.

The next problem I ran into is that paxutils doesn't compile cleanly. Perhaps 
Sergey can look into that, as the code indeed looks dicey (it even has comments 
saying it's dicey...) Tail of the log attached.
