I do not think so, I think that it is an issue with the way the images
are generated, they should be generated for an approximate size of
displayed text or something like that, but I may be wrong.

Ok, thanks, my screen was not big enough to see the --, so it should be
the same issue as for @math.

I have seen screenshots of AUCTeX (I believe) where the size of one line
from TeX was very similar to the size of one line in Emacs, my wild
guess is that it was not by chance.  It probably isn't possible to do
exactly the same if the size of the font in emacs display is needed to
be known, but at least having the images corresponding to the typical
size of fonts on screen would be nice.
