[Bug-wget] wget no-clobber operation

I am trying to mirror a web site and would like to keep backup copies of the
files that get changed.
Like the no-clobber process file.txt will become file.1 then file.2 and so on
as new versions of the file get mirrored from the web site.
Using -N -r or even -m all cause problems because they do not preserve the
original file. If I use any of these options the newer remote file overwrites
the older local file.
I want to keep the older local file and the newer remote file.
Is there any way to do this?
