Let me just remind everyone that a very common setup for people behind proxies like in large companies, is to not resolve "outer" host names at all or even to resolve them to other (wildcard style) addresses.
Yes it's happen also happen that big companies have hostnames with the same domain extarnal/internal for that is useful to have subnets in no_proxy instead of domain wildcard.


Also relevant: by resolving target host names on the host you're leaking info to the local DNS server etc which host names you're actually going to ask the proxy for.
