As a test I did this
GitHubDesktop-linux- 100%
[==============================================================
=======>]   92.89M   14.41MB/s
GitHubDesktop-linux- 100%
[==============================================================

GitHubDesktop-linux- 100%

release-3.3.18-linux 100%
[==============================================================
=======>]   19.29M    2.24MB/s
                          [Files: 4  Bytes: 351.28M [26.59MB/s] Redirects: 4
Todo: 0  Errors: 0 ]
msetzerii@setzconote:~/testw$ ls -l
total 359740

 20236817 Jun 18 19:32 release-3.3.18-linux1.tar.gz
       315 Jun 18 19:31 wgettest2

$ cat wgettest2
wget -B
https://github.com/shiftkey/desktop/releases/download/release-3.3.18-linux1/ \
GitHubDesktop-linux-amd64-3.3.18-linux1.deb \
GitHubDesktop-linux-x86_64-3.3.18-linux1.AppImage \
GitHubDesktop-linux-x86_64-3.3.18-linux1.rpm \
https://github.com/shiftkey/desktop/archive/refs/tags/release-3.3.18-linux1.tar.gz

That seemed to do downloado the files into current directory.
Did find if I used the -rcP .
It created a sub directory github.com with a robot.txt file in it??

So, not clear on why that happens?
