Hi,
i have now classified the behavior with -stdio_sync "off" as a bug.
Thus it got fixed. Now there happens no final fsync(2) with "off".
A new -stdio_sync mode "end" has been introduced to keep the old
behavior available.
Further, to be more competitive to genisoimage, the -stdio_sync
mode is defaulted to "off", as soon as an input file is given in
-as mkisofs emulation.
This happens only if no previous setting of -stdio_sync occured.
Please test whether this gives a sufficient performance:

genisoimage is still clearly faster than xorriso -as mkisofs,
if the image is smalli. E.g. 2.1 seconds versus 3.4 seconds.
There is no clear advantage for either of them, if the image has a
few hundred MB.
Time measurement becomes non-deterministic at this size here.
Variations of 25 % are normal. The averages are quite stable,
though.
(In my tests i had to disable -J of genisoimage, because it threw
an error about duplicate Joliet names. Buggy name mangling.
Without -J on larger images, xorriso seems faster than genisoimage.
32 versus 44 s. I have no idea why this could be ... maybe the
sequence of disk file reading ...)
Have a nice day :)
Thomas
