Gentoo currently includes Zile with its minimal install media, but I'm
not sure if I can convince our release engineering team that in future
they should also include Lua.

Will there be continued support for the C version?

Could you indicate what other packages are needed as prerequisites?
I've tried with lua-5.1.4 and the following packages from luaforge:
   
   luaposix-5.1.9
   luancurses-0.01
   luabit-0.4
   lrexlib-2.5.3

but I get the following error:
