There's not a huge development community around "ls" either. Some
people might say it's already over-developed.
The FSF has provided a huge community around "ls" and other binutils.
That's why you can use them for free and they work well, without jerry
rigged compatibility libraries. When Stalin's author, or a 3rd party
community, takes on responsibility even remotely resembling what the
FSF has done, I think you'll have a basis for comparison here.
