You suggestion to use string->keyword rather than string->symbol
in your comment on ticket 433 fixed the problem.  I've checked in
a fix and closed the bug report.

Thank you both Alex and Felix for being willing to deal with an
overly complex description of the problem.  I really appreciate the
help I got from both of you.

Alex, you had the kernel of the issue figured out right away, and it
really helped narrow my focus on what kind of problem I was looking
at.  Felix, I would not have known to look for a string->keyword
routine, even with Alex pointing in the right direction.
