Hi Thomas, Tom,
I personally do use eclipse, both with just project files and ant scripts.
I have found that both have problems.
I don't believe that Tom would suggest using these project files as the
sole means of building GNU Classpath, only as a means to start people off
using Eclipse for development. One of the complaints commonly voiced by
those wishing to join any OSS development project is the relatively high
setup cost; this would make entry easier.
With the possibility of starting to deal with the native code in GNU
Classpath in Eclipse and with the associated navigation, refactoring tools
and gdb makes Eclipse as a development tool - not sole build tool - a very
attractive proposition. I use Eclipse for developing Odonata[1] and am
very happy with it.
If somebody wishes to put forward an ANT build.xml for inclusion into
the GNU Classpath I would support them for the same reasons: they make
starting to participate in the project easier.
Thanks,
Stephane
