Maybe your tar version doesn't handle long path names?
It seems to work for me:

$ tar zxf classpath-0.20.tar.gz
$ cd classpath-0.20/examples/
$ ls gnu/classpath/examples/CORBA/SimpleCommunication/communication                  

This is with tar (GNU tar) 1.15.1
