I have applied the patch and made a few small modifications: removing 
the now redundant $(sources) and $(classes) variables, specifying 
-Wno-long-long for the libxmlj JNI sources, and uncommenting the 
javadoc target.

I've tested this patch and it works very nicely indeed. I have had some 
weirdnesses building on Darwin on an HFS+ volume, but I think this is 
due to a skewed file modification date on this system - if anyone else 
has problems, just try running make again a second time if the build 
fails the first time around. It works fine on Linux.
