I don't think this patch is required.
buf is a `char []', and a char can never be negative.
So I think adding this test changes nothing.
It may make sense to remove the redundant
test from convertToBytes().
Or perhaps to let the UTF-8 encoder generate
"java-style" UTF-8, where \0 is mapped to a
2-byte value (this would have to be optional).
