In my previous analysis of the modes we have available, I discussed only
the input of a single note, and editing notes. On that basis Mode 2 came
out a winner since it requires the same number of keystrokes in general,
but in a more logical order AND it allows more single keystroke editing
of notes already entered.
However, if you consider entering several notes then Mode 3 becomes more
attractive since you don't have to re-specify the duration, and often in
music the duration is the same while the pitch changes. So Mode 3 would
be preferred for simply entering music note by note into a score.
For this reason, on reflection I think Mode 3 should be the default and
this suggests the mode names - in terms of the numbering of the previous
email- should be
Mode 1 Classic mode
Mode 2 Edit mode
Mode 3 Insert mode,
Edit mode can in fact be improved:
At present in Edit mode if you put the cursor on a note and press a
duration it inserts a note of that duration - it would make sense to
change this so that it changed the duration of the current note. This is
then a very logical Edit mode, where you can change everything about a
note by putting the cursor on it and pressing the usual keys.
You would need to hit Insert (or whatever keybinding you have) to switch
to Insert mode to actually insert a note. (Internally this would exploit
the cursor_appending field which is set when you are entering notes at
the end of a measure and clear when the cursor is on a note, as in
editing.)
You would also use Edit mode for entering pure rhythms, e.g. drum music
or music where you are intending to add the pitches in a second pass
using the pitch recognition system.
Feedback please!
