I think the real problem will be finding someone to mentor you: Denemo
is a small project and I believe a mentor can only have one student. For
future years you could place yourself in a strong position by
contributing small fixes to Denemo (and, indeed, other projects which
you have a personal interest in). Denemo has many, many, loose ends,
some listed in the bug tracker, others just obvious. Being able to code
reliably in C is not a very common skill nowadays. If you can bring
clarity and elegance to you coding you will soon be made welcome in many
projects.
