when you install LilyPond on a GNU/Linux system what you get to execute
is a shell script:

#!/bin/sh
me=`basename $0`
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/home/rshann/lilypond/usr/lib"
exec "/home/rshann/lilypond/usr/bin/$me" "$@"


so perhaps that script is what the lilypond path should be pointing to?
