BTW:  The ia64 failure is due to a "bug" in guile-1.6 sources.  I wrote
      the code myself on a Suse 7.2a distro.  Most probably the
      necessary header inclusions have changed with advancing glibc
      versions on ia64-linux.  IIRC the guile people also bumped into that
      problem.  We need to check whether they fixed it themselves in CVS
      or later guile-1.6.x versions.
