The Pipelight developer (Michael Müller <address@hidden>) said:
Pipelight does not contain any DRM code, all parts are open source.
Nevertheless, I don't think that the description below is exactly
correct. Pipelight is not a reimplementation of Silverlight (like
Moonlight) but instead it is wrapper. Pipelight translates between the
Win32 and Unix version of the Netscape Plugin API (NPAPI).
We provide a native browser plugin which internally starts Wine to load
the original Win32 plugin. This means that you are actually using
Silverlight through Wine if you watch a Netflix video with Pipelight.
The necessary DRM code is provided by Silverlight. A more precise
description can be found at [1] (slides 5 - 11).
Pipelight is also not limited to Silverlight, but in theory supports all
NPAPI plugins which work in Wine (Staging). A list of officially
supported plugins can be found at [2].
Kind Regards,
Michael Müller
