I was unable to reproduce your problem.
I tested on a dual processor Athlon MP 1800+  and a 1.7 GHz P4.

I used the new tarball that I just released, mc4020-0.7.tar.gz, which
is the previous CVS head with some of the unneccessary debug chatter
turned off.  You can get the tarball at 
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/opensdr/mc4020-0.7.tar.gz?download

It also logs its version, 0.7, when the module loads.
