[Discuss-gnuradio] Front-end 802.11b

I am working on a software based implementation of the 802.11b and 802.11a standards. Not being a radio engineer I would appreciate any help with the following questions.

Would it be feasible to implement the wireless lan standards using the software radio concept?

Does anybody know about any RF-front end implementations (perferrably interfaced to a PC) for the above two standards that can be used directly for writing PHY layer code.

Is it possible to design a RF front end that would switch between the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz as is used by the 802.11 a&b standards  using software/hardware control? Would it be better to do a software switch or a hardware switch?

Are there any readymade hardware designs similiar to the gnuradio project working at these frequencies?

Has anyone attempted these implementations before?

Appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Saber
