The gnuradio "short" is called "signed word" in audioese, sox uses *.sw
or -s -w

sox audio.wav -r 32000 -c 1 audio.sw

will convert a wav file to 32khz single channel signed word you can
open with src = gr.file_source(gr.sizeof_short,"audio.sw").
