I completely agree with you. If the source were still available, we or someone else could do that. I did not manage to keep a copy through various hard drive crashes.

No. I was quite careful. Qt **4* *is released GPL to Windows. The
software in question was written in Qt 3 and at the time, there was no
GPL for Qt 3. The complaint happened before Qt 4 was released for the
first time.

Here is my understanding of that situation. He wrote it in Qt3. There

when Trolltech objected, he removed it.
This contradicts with Trolltechs statement for the Qt/Windows Open Source
Edition which explicitly states that it is licensed under the GNU GPL see
link below:

I can't see how this would stop anyone in releasing source code for
software written under the terms of the GPL license.

Ok, I understand.

I always had a copy of Qt 3.2.1 Non-Commerical Edition for Windows that came with the book "C++ GUI Programming with Qt3" ISBN 0-13-124072-2.

However, I can't see how the release of application source code can be in conflict with Trolltech's IP as long as none of the Qt3 resource files are included with the distribution.

Porting to qt4 shouldn't be much of a problem though.
