No need to stop the graph to alter the connections.

Use lock/unlock.  E.g.,

  top_block.lock()
  disconnect(...)
  ...
  connect(...)
  ...
  top_block.unlock()


There are some exxamples that do this, and there's been discussion on
the mailing list.
