Not clear to me how to use them to effect non-uniformly-spaced channels.  Also, individual channels will have their own bandwidths.

Perhaps using wavelets? The idea is to look at a much more "coarse" piece of spectrum until there is something of *possible* interest (cheap to compute). Then zoom in when something pops up (expensive to compute).
