May I respectfully suggest that this thread has now gone far enough, and people
should stop contributing to it (I just noticed how much time I've spent on it).

While it's undoubtedly useful to raise these concerns occasionally, extended
debate gets us nowhere.  If we had spent as much time working  on the small 
problems
in the text system that Nicola isolated for us two weeks ago, the project would
already have improved significantly,

I think that we are probably all aware of the main points by now - but my final
word on the subject is that we need developers, and new developers will bring
new/improved technologies better than anything else... and I don't mean that
talking about getting nerw developers is going to help - if you have ideas on
how to do it, implement them.
