Lots of people read the lists from Usenet, or from list archives. Those
people
could not post without subscribing themselves.
But mostly they don't post.
I agree that making postings member-only would be an inconvenience for
some people,
but I think it may be justified.
Of course, a superior solution would be if the people managing the GNU
machines could
implement a better spam blocker ... this would benefit all GNU mailing
list users,
rather than just the gnustep lists.
