This reminds me of all the warning messages when compiling core/base, where gcc-3.2 complaint quite often that some casts change the minimumalignment requirements.
Could you send those warnings (possibly privately (also intersted, Richard?)) I'd like to see if any of them have obvious fixes, that we could still put into the 1_6_0 branch.
