Since you use art backend, you have no font cache.
If you want to use the fonts X offers, you need to use xlib backend.
I have long time not to use xlib backend
because the problem of font management.
Have no idea whether it is improved throught Xft2 & fontconfig.
By the way, you can automatically create nfont.

Yu-Ju Chen in his page on GS and internationalisation mentions the
directory ~/GNUstep/Library/Font/Cache/. However, I don't have that
directory on my system. Has its location been moved? If so, where? I'm
using the art backend. Right now the only fonts available in GNUstep are
those which I've created (as nfonts) and put in /usr/GNUstep. How do I
enable being able to use any font which X has within GNUstep apps?
