It's (deliberately) platform independent. All it needs is a buffer to
render to (an implementation of XWindowBuffer, more or less). There are
a few X11-specifics in the setup code. Grepping for "RDS" will show you
where.
(When there are more users of back-art, it might be good to try to make
the abstraction a bit cleaner; for now, it's just a small amount of
code, and without more users, it's hard to design a good abstraction.)
