No, it is not necessary. In some situations it can be helpful, but it's not
at all necessary.

TextEdit does not use the NSDocument classes. That is why it can open any
file, while text editors using NSDocument can't.

No, it's not right. GNUstep's implementation is complete, as far as I know.
