I did not change my mind since last October and I don't see any new argument in your mail.
Making art the default backend in precompiled packages is fine for me, as there we can control the pre-requesits. Having art as the default in the source code would require, in my view, that we can test in configure that all the required libraries and fonts are available (and fall back to xlib if not). As soon as somebody adds this behaviour to the configure of back we should switch to art as the default.
For the arguments behind this, please reread the old mails. Cheers Fred
