Hmm, not sure, but could you try to recompile the application you want
to use? I know that backends should be swapable without recompilation,
but I had to recompile all applications once to get them working with
the cairo backend. This may not even be caused by the cairo backend,
rather one tends to forget to recompile applications and so they still
link with older GNUstep libraries.
