Having read the WWN (wine weekly news) lately, I think I can answer yourquestion. Subpixel rendering in freetype2 uses algorithms under patent (ironically, their held by Apple) and freetype2 is usually compiledwithout them, to avoid infringement. If you live in a country that doesnot recognise software patents, you may be able to recompile freetype2 for subpixel support.
Even if you live in a country that does recognize software patents, you should build freetype2 with subpixel support. It's not like the Patent Office is going to come arrest you. They don't even have time to *read* the things after all, much less come find you and throw you in jail. :-)
