In fact there have been two more such meetings after AlpenSTEP:
1. AlpenSTEP (Setp 07)
2. FreiburgSTEP (July. 08)
3. OrobienSTEP (Jan 09)
For 2&3 there was only a core team willing (or able) to attend
(everyone was invited!): Fred, Gerold, Riccardo and myself. We made a
lot of bug fixing and troubleshooting progress there (Flexisheet,
Cairo, SWK, others).
So, IMHO I would leave FOSDEM what it is: a conference&fair to impress
and attract the public.
Plus having more such developer weekends (Hackathon, WLAN party, etc.)
to make coordinated progress. I think trying to squeeze both into a
single activity doesn't work (although it is attractive for us to
reduce travelling expenses).
Who volunteers to organize the next "${mountain}STEP"?
