Do you possibly use Intel graphics hardware (typically as on-board graphics) ? Intel's Xorg driver has some difficulties with multiple OpenGL layers or whatever, showing symptoms like you the one you describe. Setting workspace animations to off/minumum and/or deinstalling compiz resolves this.
I can assure you, GNUstep is useable on Ubuntu Hardy and Intrepid and likely other versions. It works here as installed from packages, with the default window manager. Buggy, but useable.
