There are 2 types of backend, windowing system and composite system, on X11 you can choose cairo, art, xlib for composite system but you can only choose x11 for windowing system. And the XIM support is in windowing system, so you can't switch to anything. Actually I always thought our XIM doesn't work. It's like I've tried it once or twice, but I can't really remember. Some Chinese users probably know better than me.
