Hard time cross building latest base

I fail to cross compile gnustep-base-1.20.1 for a different platform. The configure script is littered with

if cross_compiling=yes then exit (1) statements. Is that version not meant to be cross built? 1.18.1 worked just fine.

Any help is appreciated.
