If you want openapp to find applications in the current directory, just add "." to your path. If you understand why this isn't a great idea, it is easy for your to live with the inconvenience of typing "openapp ./AppName.app".

Also, consider that if you have an application in your CWD, you can just open it by typing appname.app/appname
Oh! I was unaware that openapp uses the PATH. In that case, not launching an app in CWD makes sense. I do find it odd that openapp inspects the PATH, since the app bundles are not executables by themselves. I do understand the logic behind it, however, and I'm fine with it.
But to be honest, I was surprised that openapp was a shell script; does it inspect the Info.plist in the app bundle at all, to determine which executable to launch?
