I could reproduce this too. I imagine this is a bug in back/xlib. For image 
drawing, xlib and art use the same code path in NSImage, so if something works 
with art but not xlib, it's probably a bug in back/xlib.

I committed a workaround which is just to get rid of the caching of a scaled 
background.
