So do you open gorm from the shell without opening any files and you get 
that error?

Have you tried uninstalling your version and compiling 1.2.18 from source?

PS: the 16bit vs 32bit was just a hint for your black areas in some 
interface parts, I hope they are gone no? It had nothing to do with crashes.
