Then it would conflict with the global menu if GNUstep's "Macintosh-style" interface is turned on. (Or with Ubuntu's Unity, although running GWorkspace in an existing desktop environment kind-of defeats the purpose.)

That said, it'd be awesome if one could put the dock on any side and let the user worry about a poor choice of dock location. :-)
